TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE PUBLIC RELATIONS - (SM Cutlip et al, Essentials of Effective Public Relations. 2002)

Guidelines for working with the media
The press is "often" unfair, unreasonable and simpy wrong. But even if it isn't our best friend, it is the best friend the nation has, and we should be thankful for it"

* Talk from the viewpoint of the public's interest, not that of the organisations or personal view
* Use clear and simple communication
* Do not make statements you do not want to be published -even "of the record"
* Start with the most important issue(s)
* Do not repeat offensive language, even to deny them
* Give direct answers
* If you do not know the answer to a question, get the answer and report back
* Do not call a press conference unless you have hard news that is relevant to the time frame
* Tell the truth

Guidelines for good media relations
The relationship with the media has an impact on the quality of news coverage, therefore a few basic rules should be followed to ensure a good working relationship

* Shoot squarely: never lie and respect a journalist priviledge to information without "leaking" it to other media
* Give service: provide information that is newsworthy, interesting and timely
* Do not beg or carp: Do not beg to have stories published or complain about story treatment
* Do not ask for kills: It is unprofessional to ask the press to suppress or kill a story and will generate ill will
* Do not flood the media: send to only one - the most appropriate journalist, keep record of newsworthy items
